An adventure across the Groote Heide in the Leenderbossen, where you can encounter everything for hours, except people
Until 1930, Leenderbos forestry housed a vast area of heathland and sand drifts. But as time passed heath became no longer profitable for agriculture and the area was neglected. Staatsbosbeheer purchased it and planted forests as part of the job creation. The Leenderbos was a typical production forest, as there were many at that time in the Netherlands.
At this time, the Leenderbos no longer has the same function as in these crisis years. Although the forest ‘supplies’ 6000 cubic meters of wood annually, recreation and natural values are now at least as important. There are many walking, cycling and riding trails. The forests are becoming more varied and therefore more attractive for different animal species.
Pure nature… that’s what you will find at the Leenderbossen…
