Every hour the participants start the same lap of 6.706 km. Finished this lap within an hour? Then you start the same round again exactly an hour after your previous start. And again an hour later. And again an hour later… There is no finish. How long the event lasts depends entirely on the participants. Anyone who drops out will receive a Did Not Finish. There is only one finisher, the winner of this event; the last man standing.
The ultra where no one finishes… Only the last man standing
Registrations open Thursday the 6th of June 2024 at 8.00 pm.
The Backyard Ultra is a concept created by Gary “Lazarus Lake” (Laz) Cantrell, known for the Barkley Marathons. This event is affiliated with backyardultra.com.
All Backyards Ultra’s worldwide adhere to the following rules:
The route of the Dutch Backyard Ultra consists of 1 loop over the Ginkelduin Estate and largely runs through nature. The route has few elevation meters.
The Basecamp of the Dutch Backyard Ultra is an open field, the size of a football field, where the 6,707m long loop begins and ends. All participants and CREW members have access to the Basecamp. Each participant will have their own spacious spot where a tent of approximately 3×3 meters can easily be placed. Participants can rest there between rounds. We start and end the route in the middle of the field, so that all tents are within 50-100 meters of the route. Please note; we cannot allow campers on this field.
All participants and CREW members can use our Basecamp Care Post. The Dutch Backyard Ultra CREW from Trail Events is fully available to all participants and CREW members. Participants can be recognized by a starting number that they are required to wear and CREW members receive a personal Dutch Backyard Ultra CREW badge with their own name and the name of the participant they support.
For both participants and their CREW members, you can use all care as long as you are in the race. If you stop, access to the Basecamp for you and your CREW will also stop.
Both participants and CREW members can also count on meals in addition to standard care. We serve meals at normal times of the day. We have breakfast in the morning, lunch with pasta in the afternoon and dinner in the evening. We ensure that there are also vegetarian meals. You can also provide your own meals if necessary.
Hot and cold drinks are available at any time of the day. We always serve water, broth, soup, coffee and tea, Coca Cola, and sports drink (Tenzing).
First aid and a masseur will be present during the event. We have a separate tent available for this.
We assume that all participants are self-supporting during the event. This means that your gear must be in order and that you carry the necessary items with you during your round.
You must bring these items with you. You can leave these items at the base camp if you do not need them on the route.
Participants may be assisted by CREW members.
